Spring 2019 Junior Programs

FUNdamental Programs

The AFTC FUNdamentals programs are designed for juniors ages 4-16. It is the perfect program for players to learn the basics of tennis - serve, rally and score to be able to play a sport for life. As a player progresses from one stage to another, more advanced techniques and ball control skills are introduced.

We offer many play opportunities for players to play the game in a fun, competitive environment. Please refer to our game days, Rogers Rookie Tour, and Future Stars schedule.

All equipment is provided by the AFTC.

Le Petit Age: 4-5
Your child discovers tennis through engaging stories and images which allows for better communication and focus. Our focus is on developing physical literacy skills, eye-hand coordination and racket ball skills. Your child will develop a love for tennis in a safe fun environment.

Red Ball Age: 6-8
We use low compression balls, smaller courts and rackets to develop basic fundamentals and ball control skills to teach kids to serve, rally and score. Using appropriate equipment and games, kids develop agility, speed and coordination to build a solid foundation to move like an athlete.

Orange Ball Age: 9-11
Progressing from red ball or starting tennis for the first time, players develop skills to play 3/4 court tennis.

Green Ball Age: 12-16
This popular tennis for teens program is designed for players to learn to play quickly. Learning tennis in a game based environment makes tennis fun and keeps the players engaged.

Junior Tennis Pathway

At the end of the Spring session, an evaluation certificate will be given to each student in our fundamental program. Upon mastering the outlined skills players will be informed by our coaching staff if they are ready to graduate to the next level. Unlike most sports, kids will spend more than one session in a level. Please refer to the pathway chart below showing the ages and the levels.

Questions & Answers

Q. How does my child get into the academy program?

A. To be eligible players need to be assessed on the required competencies. For example, physical literacy skills, following instruction, co0ordination, and overall desire to learn. Contact Rufus Nel at [email protected] for more information.

Q. Can my child join the academy at any level and age?

A. This can be done at any stage. Kids in the fundamental stream can cross over to the academy stream on the recommendation of their coach.

Q. Do the kids learn different skills in each stream?

A. No, they learn the same skills. The expectation is higher in the academy stream as they train in a more competitive environment.
